Every Thursday, we have a community recs post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments. This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account to make posts of your own, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget, you can most deffo make posts seven days a week. :D!)

So what cool fic/vid/art have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

  1. Love Letter To Fandom by marlinspirkhall. Star Trek TOS centered, but really about the fandom experience.

  2. Spike and 19 more of my Buffyverse faves: a Venn diagram by thenewbuzwuzz. I particularly like the elaboration of how there are many ways or reasons of enjoying a character, though I suspect the Buffyverse has a particularly large group of people with their own arcs, as well as the single standalone characters who are fun.

  3. Merthur sketch by lefayart. The emotion in this Merlin artwork comes across so strongly!

  4. Sharing his snacks by kayla.bee.marie. Different emotion for this Mandalorian fanart, but also enjoyable!

  5. Fanart: Baby Driver by Serena_A. This Merlin AU fanart has such a great 70s look to it.

Hey all! First, I just want to give a huge shout out to everyone who participated in Rectember. Thank you to all the people who recced, the people who commented on the recs posts, and the people who followed the recs and found new fanworks to enjoy. If you didn't get around to posting all the recs you intended, never fear, themed recs are always welcome to be posted to the comm at any time, no excuse necessary. :) And if you want to look at the themes again, you can find them all here.

I'm just really pleased to see so many folks get a little more comfortable with posting recs here. I saw a lot of new names, yay. Now that you're in the habit, feel free to post recs to the comm anytime. ;) If you have a theme of your own or just a single rec to share, you are always welcome to post them to the comm!

I will probably do a pop-up recs week every few months, just for something different. If you really liked that style of reccing and would like to do it more often, you should check out [community profile] fancake, a reccing comm that has a theme every month.

Dependency by walkingivy
Fandom: Star Trek TOS
Pairing: Bones/Spock
Word Count: 158,197 words (for the entire series)
Rating: T (parts 1-4), E (part 5)
Warnings: Hurt/Comfort
Summary: When Spock and Bones are trapped in a no-win scenario on a slave planet, they become closer than anyone would have thought possible.
Reccer's Note: This story is as good as any of the Star Trek tie-ins I've read with the added bonus of Spones. The author does such a great job of creating believable Trek missions with interesting aliens, while also blending in canon events. It is very McCoy focused, but there are other POVs, and everyone sounds in character. The author also does an amazing job of bringing back small plot points from the early part of the series and making them relevant later on. The romance between Spock and McCoy is very, very slow burn, but feels amazingly worth it. The first four parts (128,197 words) make a complete and satisfying story, the fifth part was a sequel that the author became disillusioned with and never completed, so you can skip it if you want.

One Night by story_monger
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Castiel/Sam
Word Count: 56,289 words
Rating: T
Warnings: Sex work, discussions of drug addiction, some discussion of past child abuse, Non-Supernatural AU, some self hatred by Cas, but he is ultimately accepting of his own and Sam's sexuality
Summary: Castiel has already gone through the rigmarole of coming out as asexual and aromantic. That somehow doesn't stop a few unruly cousins from setting Castiel up with a stupidly tall sex worker named Sam. Castiel is mortified and ready to put the whole thing behind him, except he and Sam inexplicably bump into each other again a few weeks later. It marks the beginning of a friendship that ushers them into new territories, both with each other and the people around them.
Reccer's Note: I don't normally like non-supernatural AUs, but this is one of my all time favourite Sastiel fics. I haven't read a lot of asexual Cas, but I think this fic handles it really well. Cas works at a museum, and Sam is a law student who pays for school via sex work. I think Sam's profession is also handled well, it showcases that it is okay for Sam to be a sex worker, while also not shying away from some of the dangers inherit in that type of work. It is such a great fic that shows Cas and Sam forming an unlikely friendship, and the two them trying to figure out what type of relationship they can have while dealing with a variety of issues. This is also where I confess that in AU fics I love when all the angels are part of a large extended, dysfunctional family, and this fic delivers. This fic is chocked full of side characters, and not just the angels, Meg, Charlie, Benny, Mrs Tran, Ellen, Jo, Ash and of course Dean. It deals with some tough issues while also managing to be sweet. I can't tell you how much I love this fic, I was sad to see it end, I just wanted to read more about their lives together

The Last Outpost of All That Is by gekizetsu
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Word Count: 59,037 words
Rating: Not Rated (but I would say it's M)
Warnings: N/A
Summary: Sam and Dean are the last two people left on Earth
Reccer's Note: The author does a fantastic job describing a post-apocalyptic world where Sam and Dean are the only two survivors, and this isn't like the apocalypse from the show with Angels and Demons, and epic battles, no this is a quiet apocalypse where Sam and Dean wake up one morning and everyone else is gone. Set roughly after the ending of season 2. The story really focuses on Dean and Sam trying to process what has happened, and the trauma of such a situation. It is wincest, but how they come together makes complete sense given the context of the story, they only have each other to turn to for comfort.

A Flower In Autumn by enigmaticagentscully
Fandom: The 100
Pairing: Kane/Abby, minor background Bellamy/Clarke
Word Count: 63,627 words
Rating: T
Warnings: AU - Regency
Summary: A.K.A. The Melodramatic Kabby Regency Romance AU You Never Knew You Needed Until Now
Reccer's Note: If you like regency romance novels you will probably enjoy this fic. The author was able to make Abby and Kane sound pretty in character even though they had been plunked into a different genre and time period, which is a feat within the itself. There are also some delightful cameos from early seasons characters like Vera Kane and Diana Sydney.

My newest favourite ship is TOS Spones, so here are a few recs

Not Everything Happens Quickly by OnlySlightlyObsessed1
Word Count: 8722 words
Rating: M
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: If Spock could only put the incident from his mind and focus on his work, he would be content. He did not have infinite time to spend on personal reflection.
Reccer's Note: McCoy almost dies and Spock can't figure out why the incident still bothers him so much. I really like the author's writing of Spock's self reflection and thought process and his realization that he has feelings for McCoy.

Nothing By Halves by therev
Word Count: 10608 words
Rating: M
Warnings: Choose No to Use warnings
Summary: McCoy wishes he could talk to Spock's human half. After a transporter malfunction, he can.
Reccer's Note: Another transporter accident, in this one Spock is split into two people, a human Spock and a Vulcan Spock, and things get a little complicated when McCoy starts to have feelings for Spock's human half. This one had the feeling of a trek episode, with the added bonus of Spones feelings.

Mirror, Mirror by twisting_vine_x
Word Count: 17683 words
Rating: T
Warnings: Choose No to Use warnings
Summary: Dealing with the aftermath of mirror!Spock’s forced mindmeld
Reccer's Note: I'm a sucker for anything that deals with the aftermath of McCoy's mind-rape by Mirror!Spock. McCoy is not dealing with his trauma well, plus he has residual effects from the meld left in his mind, Spock realizes that something is wrong and confronts McCoy. This fic handles McCoy's trauma well, and also has good descriptions of mind melds.

Surgeon's Mate by belmanoir
Word Count: 4590 words
Rating: M
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: Spock likes McCoy. McCoy won't take a hint.
Reccer's Note: Dealing with the aftermath of "Bread and Circuses", a great pining Spock fic, with McCoy being under the mistaken impression that Spock is pining for Kirk.

Negativity Bias by OnlySlightlyObsessed1
Word Count: 6222 words
Rating: M
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: It's a common human characteristic to interpret ambiguity as a negative. McCoy is several assumptions ahead of Spock
Reccer's Note: The fic begins during the episode "Operation Annihilate", the author changes the reason for Spock's eyesight returning, and I think I like their explanation better than the show's. I also really like that in this fic McCoy reveals his feelings, although he thinks that Spock isn't interested, so he thinks he is going to be stoic about the whole thing, which just confuses Spock.

Sorry about the lateness, guys! Thank you all SO MUCH for your Rectember themed recs so far! And thanks to everyone responding to other people's recs, too - I know that really helps reccers feel like they're doing something worthwhile. :)

Anyway, for those of you who have unthemed recs you'd like to share, here is our weekly community recs post! Every Thursday, we have a post like this one where you can drop a rec or five in the comments. This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, if you don't have a DW account to make posts of your own, or if you're just shy. :)

(But don't forget, you're also welcome to post recs directly to the comm seven days a week. :D)
