I can't count the number of times I've read these fics… I've got lots of favorites, but all of the ones on this list are ones I will just browse to on my hard drive (I save everything I like reading) and pull up to read, because I remember the author and title straight off, lol.
I left out anything that was a perma-WIP, or where I couldn't pick even just *one* of the many fics I love by an author. Those are better suited for a thorough recs post on another day.
Leverage
I've listed these in some of the community recs posts but these two are honestly my "most read" for the fandom, so I have to list them - I keep going back to re-read them, lol.
To Have What It Takes by Zilentdreamer (1419 words)
Powerful character study of Nate (and a few others) set as an episode tag to The Scheherazade Job. The words are like a punch to the gut at times.
Feels Like Home by daniellemydear (80220 words)
Very well-written and in-character, long slow burn friends to lovers Eliot/Parker fic. If you've never considered them as a pairing (other than part of the OT3), read this. You may change your mind!
The Lord of the Rings (books)
Captain My Captain by IsabeauofGreenlea (307329 words)
This will take a good bit of time to read, but it was one of my semi-early favorites and I still go back and re-read portions of the entire shared universe that she and Altariel (and to a lesser extent, Dwimordene) have written in. One of the few OCs I've really loved (and there's some shipping of her with a few canon characters at various points, some one-sided, but I hesitate to say which as it will spoil parts of the fic).
Flame of the West by Altariel (1399 words)
This short fic shows the beginnings of a deep friendship between Aragorn and Faramir, and there's a couple little things about it that just tug at my heart. Incredibly lovely.
The Roots of the Ivy by Aranel Took (228044 words)
Long AU that adds one event to The Return of the King - which affects a whole lot of the future after the war ends. Follows canon pairings but also has Merry/Éowyn in major parts (which is a rarepair), and a lot of OCs.
The Matrix
Green Rain by Chaotic (41871 words)
Multiple different POVs of Trinity and Neo and their relationship, from her teen years through post-Revolutions; incredibly well-written and nails characterization perfectly, using backstory, canon events, and filler scenes to flesh everything out. By the time you finish reading, you can't help but love them deeply.
The Pretender
MMB's magnum opus (in my opinion), or what I call her "finishing series", because it finishes up the entire Pretender story (taking the movies as canon) to a satisfying finish.
I'm not even going to try to give the word count for all of them, just take my word for it: It's a LONG read to get through the whole set. The first three are relatively short, but the last three will take days of steady reading, at the very least.
If you run into issues where the scene breaks appear to be missing (I know ff.n changed its formatting at one point, causing them to vanish, and she was going to have to go back and redo them), let me know; I created epubs of them all with proper scene breaks and everything.
The links to each fic, in reading order:
Retrospective
Picking Up The Pieces
Family Ties
Balancing the Scales
Truth and Consequences
Resolutions
Rizzoli & Isles
A Beggar to the Living by funnyhowthatis (296 words)
Angsty one-shot set from Maura's POV set just after the S1 finale, with some beautiful lines. The antepenultimate sentence haunts me.
The End of the World by romana2525 (3275 words)
A post-apocalyptic AU that's a little heartbreaking but Jane and Maura have each other…
Out of Africa by Ark ThirtySix (39245 words)
A longer but very emotional story with alternating Jane and Maura POVs. References to/themes of sexual trauma / noncon, so be warned for that. Has a happy ending.
Rookie Blue
It's hard to narrow down to just a few, given I made a mega recs post once of close to 200 favorites, but these are the ones I tend to re-read periodically.
This Rookie's Life by nawlins79 (91916 words)
This fic diverges from canon at 2x04, and gets to a McSwarek ending a lot faster and happier overall than the show did. I particularly like how it handled the Boyd & Brennan thing. NSFW at points.
Deep by surreallis (12338 words)
An very well-written alternate undercover case with Andy as well as Sam. NSFW at points.
Whistleblower by balladofbliss (19432 words)
An alternate post-5x11 fic, this is a MUCH better take on the corruption and the Marlo baby thing than the way the show handled it.
Smallville
Always by TheDieHard (5387 words)
A Clark & Chloe friendship fic set just after the last line of "Scare".
Leap by margroks (14052 words)
This fic had me in stitches, it was just too funny! Clark, family, & friends, all non-shippy. Apologies for having to deal with the formatting issue - apparently the author left off a closing italics or something, so most of the fic is all in italics. The fic is worth it, I promise.
Sue Thomas F.B.Eye
Breakfast Date by DKateri (5055 words)
A sweet Jack/Sue fic that's really more friendship (at this point, anyway) but there are definite hints! It's a missing scene for "Adventures in Babysitting" from S3.
X-Men Original Movieverse
Alive and Dying by darkstar (no wordcount, but it's very short)
This is a poem, and a seriously well-written one at that. Powerful and emotional. Logan/Rogue.
It's Raining Men by jjblazer (no wordcount available)
Had to dig in the Wayback Machine to get this one, I just re-read my saved copy all the time. A hilarious AU of Logan and Rogue's first meeting, and quite shippy.
The Evolution of Jubilee by Mara (11305 words)
A great Jubilee-centric story with some activism and maturing. Based loosely on the first film but with additions from the comics, ignores 2nd and 3rd films.
I ended up skipping Alphas and Push entirely because as much as I enjoy re-reading fics from those fandoms, I have a lot of "I love reading these" rather than a few really strong standouts - or in the case of Alphas, I have one that I'm saving for the rarepair post I'll get to another day.
And I couldn't even *try* to come up with a list for Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. I've read and re-read SO MANY of the fics over the years (it was one of my first fandoms) that the list would be ridiculously long. Suffice it to say, I'll have to make a recs list just for that fandom sometime. But that might be a while, lol.
