[personal profile] glitteryv posting in [community profile] recthething
Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fanarts/fancrafts/fanvids/podfics/fics/some other kind of fanwork have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

[personal profile] candyheartsex only opened about 12 hours ago so I haven't had much time to peruse the collection but here's some quick art recs from it:

Ancient Greek Religion & Lore - The Seduction of Hera. Summary: Zeus isn't the only one with affairs... (amazing Dionysus/Hera art, locked to archive)

Bone - Jeff Smith (Comics) - You'll get that done by next winter. Summary: Granma, Thorn and a whole lot of wool. (I don't actually know this fandom, but this art about knitting is adorably sweet)

Discworld - Do not meddle in the affair of wizards. Summary: Good life advice, that. Regrettably, Vimes' career made him neglect many such warnings, and here we are. (excellently hilarious art)

Original Works - [ART] Playful. Summary: A hapless dragon and a ball of fluff. (very cute)

Mononoke-hime | Princess Mononoke - Hunting the Tyrant. Summary: Who is the Lamb and who is the wolf is a matter of perspective. (Absolutely incredible)

The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù - Song & Verse. Summary: Fanart entry for 2024 Candy Hearts Exchange. Shen Jiu/Shen Yuan. (lovely, locked to archive)

Sesame Street - I 🖤 U . Summary: Bert and Ernie are cooking. Naturally, Ernie doesn't take it as seriously as Bert would like. (Sweet Bert/Ernie comic)

A rec-in-progress (aka a rec for an active WiP):

The Island by [archiveofourown.org profile] triedunture (Our Flag Means Death, Stede Bonnet/Izzy Hands + Stede Bonnet/Edward Teach + Izzy Hands/Edward Teach, rated E, 49k words to date) is currently up to 11/? chapters of clever and sweet parallel universe crossing.

It starts with Stede waking up post-canon in the inn he's building with Ed. Only it isn't an inn, it's a homestead. And it isn't Ed in bed with him—it's Izzy. It soon becomes clear (with a nice bit of sea-metaphor fantasy that slots into the canon well) that two Stedes from parallel universes have inadvertently switched places. We then follow canon Stede as he tries to get home to Ed while also learning more about Izzy and about the version of himself that exists in this other world where the events of season 2 went differently. I have a weakness for well-thought-out canon divergence and parallel universes, and for the amnesia trope—and while this isn't an amnesia story per se, it scratches that same itch for me of a character rediscovering their own life through fresh eyes. All told, this is so far some great execution of some of my favourite ways to remix a canon or a character in fic.

Very belatedly again (I need to set up a reminder on my new comp, lol, but also need more time), have another Leverage rec:

The Second Needlepoint Job by Distracted (651 words)
A funny little fic with a lot of Nate and Quinn (and the others making their appearances).

And because I have had some fun reading other stuff lately, have a few LOTR recs too:

How The Elf-King Stole Khuzmus by DeHeerKonijn, PointlesslyPoetic (1356 words)
This is the LOTR/Hobbit retelling of the Grinch, complete with high-quality illustrations. Sheer amazingness.

A Queen For The King by urban_trekker (905,614 words)
Yes, this fic is really THAT long. And it's still a WIP. If that turns you away from it, more's the pity, because it's one of the most entertaining fics I've read in a long time. Did I mention it's also a Modern Setting AU? And an Éomer/OC fic? And I still absolutely love it? Both of those would normally make me wary with LOTR, but this is done so utterly fantastic that I can't help but rec it to everyone and a half. I mean, how can you go wrong with phrases like "rode her motorbike through the Ungol Pass" and "Rohanese parliament"? It's got romance (including a secret relationship), it's got humor and snarking, it's got political intrigue like crazy, and the worldbuilding is very, very good. I read it straight through (and barely got sleep that night, lol - 900k+ takes a LONG time to read!) and then went back and re-read it more slowly over the next few days. Subscribed instantly. Can't wait for the author to write more, but even if they don't, it was the best day ever and the story is living in my head right now, lol. If you don't know LOTR, don't worry - you can TOTALLY read this, everything is explained in the story like an original work.

Tbf, I can read 1000 wpm easy on fiction, and I skimmed some sections even more the first time, so it went faster than normal, plus I started it early afternoon and read it like nearly all night long. /o\ Terrible, it was. But I couldn't stop, it was so good. So many funny bits I want to quote and snicker at. Can't wait to see what happens next.
